Continuous investment in clean energy

Iberdrola anticipated the “energy transition” 15 years ago, with a strategy focused on efficient renewable energy. The company invests in clean energy, pumped hydroelectric energy storage, smart grids and digitalisation, key to integrate renewable energy. Iberdrola promotes the electrification process and enables consumers to fully participate in energy transition. Iberdrola also contributes to GHG emission reductions by promoting electromobility and deploying innovation programs.

  • Invest €11.5 billion in new 5,200 MW wind and solar capacity by 2022 and €250 million annually in innovation;
  • Operate and develop 100GWh pumping storage capacity by 2022;
  • Operate almost 1,200,000 km of transmission and distribution networks, over 200,000 km of smart networks and 13 million smartmeters;
  • Efficiently integrate solar photovoltaic in the grids: SmartSolar services on solar PV offered to households and small and medium enterprises.

As an example, Wikinger offshore wind farm project is a symbol of Iberdrola’s commitment to innovation and sustainability. Its construction sited in the Baltic Sea calls for an investment of €1,400 million. The power generated by the wind farm will suffice to cover the electricity needs of over 350,000 German homes, avoiding the annual emission of nearly 700,000 tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere.
